RARE AIR: PRAGUE

_DSC2899 E1 SM
The narrow stone streets of Prague are filled with many sights. But this is a rare find.

We’ll call this A-Few-Words-Only Friday:

Just in case it’s been so long that you may have forgotten: I am Badfish. I’m not dead. My fingers are not broken. My computer is not broken (now). I’m not giving up on blogging. I’m not in Prague (now). I’m not in Malta (now). I’m not in Amsterdam (now). I did not find a sweety in Bucharest who cooks like a chef and wanted to marry me, and abscond with her to Uzbekistan. I am wearing thongs. I’m almost ready to write a real post. I’m almost ready to begin commenting (on my blog and yours). Just so you know this is me and not some hacker using my blog…I was thinking about writing the word “poop” but then I changed my…oh wait.

Question of the day:  Have you ever seen a man wearing a skirt, carrying a whip and a leather jacket, and standing in front of a Starbucks in a 17th-century building?

    • Yup…absconding! It’s what I do best. It’s sometimes just for fun. Sometimes, a necessity. Sometimes, escaping the what is in life. Love the slogan–all we do is travel (and abscond)

  1. Missed your slice and slant on life. Welcome back!

Wonder what secrets a Starbucks in a 17th century building holds when it has clientele armed with whips and knobbly knees? He looks like he’s checking no-one’s watching before he goes in.

    • Slice and Slant…I think that’s my new blog line. Glad to see you’re still around, Safar. And secrets in that Starbucks…yah, bunches you’d imagine, especially at that site, just off the ally toward Wenceslas Square, where riots begin.

  2. hey Baddie! and MM and Safar and Joaneisco! Ciao all!
Baddie, i reckon that photo of the Scotsman outside of a Starbucks in Prague oughta take the WordPress PhotoChallenge Photo of the Year Award!

and as I was just saying over at Mary @mindful wanderings ‘ blog – this rare challenge seems to have rendered us all photo heavy and speechless!!!!!

@MM, i never did get to that tarot garden in Italy, too busy hanging out in a Venetian hospital instead :), and i did see your great “all we do is travel sign” but couldnt see where to comment..

and @ Safar, im still trying to dream up haikus!

Jeez Louise I think ive said more here than i said on my ‘rare’ blog post!!!

    • Debbie, sounds like you’ve fully recovered from sighing under the Bridge of Sighs in an ambulance with oars. Hey, tell me this: in that hospital…could you hear the water lapping at the stone outside your window, could you hear the gondoliers rowing, people kissing? Are you going to write that story…or did I already miss it while on WP sabbatical?

      Like

      • i could see the water from the window of the Venetian hospital, and the food was awesome, yum, there pasta pesto, steamed chicken.. delish….. no gondoliers as its near the lagoon, no people kissing… and thieves in the hospital…. not sure if i will write that story…… i havent made sense of it myself yet… like WHY.. since VENICE has been the only ever place on my bucket list, before i even knew the term bucket list…. anyhow.. moving right along… plenty of Bridges to Sigh Upon in Suzhou….

and I;ll but up a sign on the BF&C Cafe “Slice and Slant”… the Cafe needed some renovation anyhow, but we will keep the basement dive. Never know when you might need a chat with the Ghost of Elvis.

        Ciao Baddie…..

        • It was on my mother’s bucket list too, although I don’t think she ever learned what a bucket list is. Probably as well. Venice wasn’t kind to her either. But she wasn’t very kind to Venice. She would definitely say to strike it off the bucket list. Hope you’ve totally recovered. Slice and Slant cafe sounds very much like it serves crooked cakes and bakes.
Take your time with the Haiku – dream away, it’s more important.

        • You make staying in a Venetian hospital sound almost poetically marvelous! Pasta pesto…my mouth is watering. But I don’t need no basement to talk to Elvis you know….

          • well…. the food was pretty yum…. and every time i’d struggle out of my bed and stumble over to the window, and see the Lagoon of Venice I’d think, hey, im in Venice, who cares that im in a hospital.

okay then, as long as you put on your blue suede shoes and boarded a train….
( you know the next line) 🙂

          • indeed – free rent and yummy food and a view of the lagoon. what more could a girl ask for?
( just get that drip out of my arm, she says, only marginally hysterical)
trouble was, i was already paying top dollar on the actual Lagoon View Apartment airbnb that i rented… sigh .. ( and unfortunately NOT on the Bridge of Sighs)
Enough! when’s your new post coming out? 🙂

          • yummy food in a hospital is enough to make you want to go. But paying for two rooms and only getting the one with the needle in your arm….ouch!

  3. Such a unique shot, Badfish. I have never seen a sight like this, except right now through your eyes. He does look like a tough guy, though – all black and he so looks ready with that whip in his hand 😀 Happy traveling and stay safe.

  4. That guy is cool! I’ve been wondering about your whereabouts actually since you just visited some of the places I most want to see in Europe. Glad to see Badfish is still out of the water!

    • Bama, right, that guy is cool. I wanted to ask him…well, what was what with his gig. But I felt a little weird, or shy. Or maybe intimidated? And thanks…I’m still out of the water. Hope you get to visit those places in Europe, they are cool.

  5. I’m actually quite fond of his outfit, minus the tattoo sleeve and whip maybe. I do miss your presence on WP but kind of envy your hiatus as well. Are you back at work? I start next week at a new school! Thought I was “retiring” when I left Chicago but I guess not … OK, bye, back to my syllabus (ugh).

    Like

    • Lex—I have to admit, I can see your attraction to his gear, and flare. I personally love his boots. And the hiatus was unplanned, and simply evolved, and I admit, contained a bit of guilt. And depression (I wanted to post, simply had no time). I thought I was retiring last year, too. But life is easy, and good, and plenty of time to travel…and then there’s also that money thing.

  6. I see you used the secret code word “thongs” so I definitely know it’s really you, Badfish. Great to see you back. I wonder if that guy’s baggage got lost on a long haul flight and he had to make do with what he could find.

    • hey Peta, I checked out your blog. I see your Ben has some long flowing robes for AD — isnt that were Mr Fish lives? Baddie, do you have your long robes to show us here? 🙂

      • Hey guys, yeah, I checked out Peta’s site, too. Some very cool sartorial stuff! And yeah, Deb, I’m now in Abu Dhabi, and I have a couple shots of me in the local garb. I have to admit, I look very cool in it. I would post it here, but I don’t know how to put a photo (without a link) in here! I am planning some posts on Abu Dhabi (why not, I’m here), so maybe I’ll add the photo then…although it does show my face and my anonymity would be lost.

Anyway, your anonymity will be lost when your best selling book is published and your airbrushed photo is on the jacket cover, right?

          Just think…”We knew him when…”

    • Hey lady: great to be back. But I have to say, taking a short sabbatical was a good thing in a couple of ways. And I’m sorry but the check has already been cashed, and the money spent on plane fare. And you are aware of our no-refund policy. But you can talk to Debbie at Spaceship China about a cup of relaxing tea! https://spaceshipchina.com/about a cup of relaxing tea!

      • yes… i sympathise with the person whose trying to chose perspectives… sigh… and yes, do pop over for a cuppa…. in fact im planning a tea-cup post soon to welcome all my new bloggies… blog followers… spaceship stowaways… etc….

As you can see, I’ve happily taken up my role as the Slice And Slant Cafe Proprietor ( renamed from Badfish and Chips Cafe) , in the absence of Lucille and Fimn, some addicitions are just addictions and you can’t do anything about it….

while i’m here….. like… that guy.. he’s just a Scotsman! why all the wondering? he’s just a Scotsman without a tartan on his kilt but he does have a red stripe on his boot to make up. Its also quite obvious why he has that whip.

Someone forewarned him that a certain Mr B Fish was out to shoot him…. and not realising that said Mr Fish was shooting with a camera, and not a gun, he bought in his whip to whip Mr Fish into shape….. BUT…

Mr Bad Fish was wearing thongs, and made his escape, running through the cobbled streets of Prague, waving his iphone with his newly snapped snap, shouting, Starbucks, I need my coffee!

I have the booty buried under the Bridge of Sighs in a waterproof container.
Shame I’ll never get back to claim it.
But if you are thinking of going to Venice, Baddie, let me know…..

Question: I wonder why I’m waffling on Cuba for December? Once Americans can go, it’s going to be chaos, eh?

      Like

      • Badfish! So good to hear from you! Cuba in December sounds perfect! We heard from a local that the weather there is great in December. Sure, there will be more and more Americans visiting but if I were you, I would go sooner than later. I’m not sure the unconventional accommodations (i.e. not luxury hotels yet) will appeal to people on a Christmas holiday. But you never know. The novelty of a new destination might be too hard to resist. But I’m guessing the biggest influx will be Spring Break when everyone wants to go to the beach. Anyway — stop waffling. Go make some French toast in Cuba! 🙂 Alison and Don want to go… Curt wants to go… we should all meet up for a dance party.

  10. Great to know you are alive and well Badfish. (now). Of course I’ve seen that kind of skirt. Hubby wears one all the time. ( Says she who is now running away giggling with Hubby in pursuit) 🙂

  11. Glad you clarified that was a whip. I was going to ask. Nice skirt the guy’s got on. Wouldn’t mind one like it myself. I think he’s a biker in a pipe band. The whip is to keep people who hate bagpipes at bay…Glad to know you’re okay and not running off to one of the Stans with someone who can cook…

There’s a picture of just such a character and setting at the top of this post (bwaahahaha, me so funny). Glad you are not hacking your own blog, but only playing a hacker hacking your blog.

If it was a broadsword rather than a whip I would have to say yes.

I thought you were in Edinburgh as its a familiar sight. Group of bikers who are into battle re-enactment do street displays here. They do lots of film work all over the place, they seem to like to wander the streets with their props.

      • Last time I saw one was at the train station, casualy carryinging a great sword strapped to his back.

Was a few years ago when they were performiing on the streets at the festival.

You need legal permission to wander about with such things here, and I suspect in our terrified world the laws may have changed here.

They dress identicaly to the guy in youre shot. I asssumed on first glance you had taken it in Edinburgh when I first saw it.

  16. Answer to your question: Yes, in Scotland….except for the whip. The whip would have certainly caught my eye and my imagination :-). I am glad to know that you are alive and well. Thinking of you often in Bali where I am finally able to experience all that I enjoyed virtually through your blog….including poopy coffee! Won’t find that at Starbucks!

  17. Hi bf
Love the rarity here – and the humor – but also the composition is outstanding – looks like you staged this – but it also seems natural and unstaged – but you know what I mean – the v made from the skirt-whip guy out – up to the vertice in the window arch –
Then your effects and soft focus –
The color of the outfits in the crowd – the pathway design –
    Ahhhh
    Very interesting photo
